Serving Our Province

POWERING NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

Our Energy Portfolio

For more than 60 years Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro has delivered electricity to the people of our province. With hydro-electric facilities from Muskrat Falls and Churchill Falls to Granite Canal and Paradise River, we proudly supply more than 91% of our electricity from renewable resources. Our commitment towards a safe and sustainable future for the province’s energy sector is one that is lived every day by our 1,500 employees.

Our system spans the province with dozens of high-voltage terminal stations and lower-voltage distribution stations. Through some of the most remote and geographically isolated areas, we maintain more than 7,500 km of transmission and distribution lines. In 2022 we invested $190 million in our assets, applying a risk-based approach to preventative and corrective maintenance to ensure matters impacting customer reliability were prioritized. This approach resulted in improvements in both the frequency of outages as well as their duration. In 2022 we marked a 7% and 14% improvement on the five-year average respectively. In addition, having our crews trained in live line techniques allowed us to avoid more than 212,000 hours of customer outages.

2022 also marked the first full year of the Muskrat Falls Generating Station supplying power as a fully-commissioned facility. With four units available for service, Muskrat Falls provided energy to provincial customers, as well as delivered power to Nova Scotia to offset carbon emitting supply. With final testing and commissioning of the Labrador Island Link being completed in 2023, Muskrat Falls will bring more renewable energy to the island and beyond.

Pride of Purpose

While our assets are critical to our system, it’s our dedicated and skilled people that are the heart of our operations, and have worked to make a significant difference in 2022.

Every day our teams work in communities throughout our province with the purpose of bringing safe, reliable, cost-conscious electricity to the people of Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond. That mission requires skilled people in all parts of our company – from engineers, powerline technicians and customer service to environmental coordinators, helicopter pilots and cyber-security experts.

Our diverse skills and backgrounds make us a stronger organization, one ready to face the challenges and opportunities of our changing energy landscape and priorities.

First and foremost, we are a Crown utility and our work supports our responsibility to serve the people of this province. We are committed to responsibly and sustainably developing our province’s energy resources and provide safe, reliable, least-cost electricity for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians and customers beyond our borders. In 2022 we continued to work through transformative change to deliver on our commitments and demonstrate that responsibility to the people of the province.

We’re also guided by our corporate values; whether working to best serve our customers, operating and maintaining our current assets or planning for the future power needs of the province, we’re safe, committed, inclusive and collaborative, forward thinking and community focused.

Our employees live these values every day, and in 2022 that was highlighted in numerous ways including:

  • The lowest number of high potential safety incidents since 2017.
  • A residential customer satisfaction rate of 89%
  • More than 212,000 hours of customer outages were avoided by doing live line work
  • Jaycee Grandy, Greg Higdon and Chad Jefford from Soldier’s Pond were awarded the Electricity Canada Lifesaving Award for their courage in a non-work related emergency incident.
  • Gord Hibbs and Linus Kelly received the Leadership in Conservation and Electrification Award – Utility Employee Luminary Award for their work on the development and expansion of the first electric vehicle fast charging network in the province.
  • Our energy efficiency programs were awarded Electricity Canada’s Sustainable Electricity Award in the Advancement of an Integrated Approach to Sustainability.

More than 20 employees travelled to Nova Scotia following Hurricane Fiona to aid in restoring power to some of the 400,000 customers affected in that province.

Positive Energy Programs

Giving back to the communities where we live and work has long been a priority for Hydro, and through our community program we have supported groups and organizations throughout the province. In November, we launched our Energy from the Heart community program which built on, and expanded, that commitment. The program connects our organizational giving to our updated corporate values, re-introduced our employee matching program and reiterated our commitment to giving with our employees.

  • Our 2nd annual Kids Eat Smart Energy Breakfast saw employees in a dozen regional offices donate to local school breakfast programs. The combined employee and corporate contribution of $48,000 enabled Kids Eat Smart to provide breakfast to every school child in the province.
  • A collaboration with Birds Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Service to install recording units along our transmission lines to improve the knowledge of bird diversity and abundance in the province.
  • We continued our decade-long partnership with Ronald McDonald House supporting the Red Shoe Crew walk, Sock It for Sick Kids and the annual radiothon. We were also proud to contribute $75,000 toward the creation of the Family Time park, an inclusive and accessible space that will allow children staying at Ronald McDonald House to play outdoors in a safe environment.

In these, and so many other ways, we’re making a tangible difference in our communities every day. As we look to 2023 and beyond we’ll continue to focus on the future needs of our system while recognizing our responsibility to our environment, our customers and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador.

At Hydro we believe it’s not only what we achieve, but how we achieve it, that allows us to be proud of what we accomplish, which is why we work each day to minimize our impact and ensure we harness opportunities that promote a sustainable future for our province for generations to come.
