Planning for your EV future

Electric vehicles are a new frontier and a big push towards a greener future for our province.

Hydro has been operating our province’s electricity system for more than 50 years. We’re focused on meeting customer needs today, while also planning ahead for the future of electricity in Newfoundland and Labrador. As the electric vehicle market continues to expand, we’re excited to help bring our province more in line with electric vehicle use across the country by helping establish the first phase of the fast-charging network, working to expand charging sites in future, offering rebates to people and businesses, and supporting a greener future for our province.

How Hydro is helping expand EV use in Newfoundland and Labrador:

Infrastructure.

Hydro built the province’s first fast-charging network – linking our province with an established network of fast-charging stations throughout Canada and making EV ownership a reality for the people of our province. Today there are 33 locations in the provincial network, with more expected in the future.

Information.

We will ensure residents and tourists alike are kept in the know about how province’s public fast-charging network. For more information on becoming an EV owner, visit takeCHARGE.

Incentives.

Hydro is working with the provincial and federal governments to offer rebates for the purchase or lease of electric vehicles.

Opportunities.

This is a new frontier and a big push towards a greener future for our province. Investigating opportunities and challenges to EV charging across the province through partnerships and direct outreach to Newfoundlanders and Labradorians is the key to our shared success.

Readying our provincial electricity system

As part of our responsibility to manage the province’s electricity system, Hydro monitors the system 24/7. As the EV market continues to grow we’re investigating the opportunities and challenges ahead, and taking steps to ensure we continue to provide reliable service for all customers while supporting a sustainable future in Newfoundland and Labrador. Hydro is working to ensure we can meet the expected increase in electricity consumption from EVs with clean, renewable energy. Increasing the number of EVs in the province will also help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and provide rate mitigation benefits for all electricity customers.

To help realize all of the potential benefits from EVs, Hydro is also planning for future customer programming to encourage EV charging during off-peak hours. If you are already an EV owner, you can do your part by scheduling your car to charge overnight and know you are leading the way towards a more sustainable future for our province!

A growing network of EV charging stations in the province

In support of local EV growth, takeCHARGE, a joint partnership between Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Newfoundland Power, installed an additional 19 EV charging stations around the province in 2022, with more planned in future. Learn more.
