We’re pleased to share that conditions have improved significantly, and the Power Warning has now been lifted.

Six units at Bay d’Espoir are now fully back in service, marking an important step forward. This progress reflects the tremendous effort and coordination across teams over the weekend.

While the situation has stabilized, very cold temperatures remain and we will keep a Power Watch in place as a precaution. This ensures we can keep customers informed and respond quickly should conditions change. NO ACTION is required from customers at this time.

A sincere thank you to our customers once again for your conservation efforts, and to everyone involved for the incredible work and dedication shown throughout the weekend. We’ll continue to monitor conditions closely and provide updates as needed.

Sunday, January 25, 6:30 a.m.

A Power Warning remains in effect. We ask customers to continue conserving power to support system stability, and to remain prepared for the possibility of outages.

We thank our customers for all their continued conservation efforts, every small action is helping to avoid moving into a Power Emergency.

Progress with ice removal at our Bay d’Espoir hydro plant was very successful yesterday and into last night. Several units have now been started, and some generation from the plant has resumed. Units are being monitored closely and are being brought online gradually to ensure stability.

We will continue to provide updates throughout the day.

Saturday, January 24, 3:30 p.m.

We are currently in a Power Warning as we expect to approach our system’s limit to supply all customers around the supper hour today. This means we are asking customers across the Island to conserve, where and when they can and only if safe to do so, particularly during critical times of day – morning and around suppertime. This can help avoid having to move to a Power Emergency, which would require short rotating outages of less than hour.

Weather conditions expected over the next few days could lead to frazil ice at our hydroelectric facilities around the province. Customer outages could occur quickly and without warning. Customers should be prepared for potential brief, rotating outages.

Hydro and Newfoundland Power are working together to ensure customers have timely updates on the situation through our Joint Advanced Notice Protocol. This is the first time since 2019 that we’ve activated a Power Watch and 2016 since we’ve issued a Power Warning.

These past 48 hours, teams at NL Hydro have been dealing with frazil ice at our Bay d’Espoir plant, which is a rare phenomenon for this particular site. As a result, for the first time since 1967, there is no electricity being generated at the plant. This is a significant and important part of our energy system, serving customers all across the Island. Teams are working tirelessly to reduce the risk of customer outages.

In addition to working to remove ice from the intakes at Bay d’Espoir, we are also bringing more energy over the Labrador Island Link and calling on our capacity agreements and imports from our partners in Atlantic Canada over the Maritime Link.

Frazil ice is a slushy ice, often formed in rivers and lakes during cold, windy conditions. It can clump together, stick to obstructions, clog water intakes and cause ice jams for our hydro power systems. While normal in many parts of the province, frazil ice is incredibly rare at the Bay d’Espoir plant.

Thank you for your efforts to conserve as we work to resolve the issues on our electricity system. We will continue to provide updates regularly for customers.
