Outage Affecting Customers in Red Bay

UPDATE: Dec 12, 2022, 10:30 am

Good morning Red Bay.

Teams have regrouped this morning with a focus on safe completion of today’s activities. There are two poles remaining to be installed. Teams have been running wire, installing conductors, guy-wires, and grounds.

We are expecting to transfer customers back to the L’anse au Loup system later today. Customers will be notified through on the ground efforts and automated calls.

There will be a brief outage required to demobilize the generator and transfer the load to our system.

Many thanks to our crews and contractors for their amazing work in less than ideal conditions and for their commitment to bringing customers back online.

UPDATE: December 11, 7:00pm

Loads have stabilized and all customers, including those in cabins areas, have been restored using emergency power.  We are still asking customers to conserve power until repairs are complete. There is no immediate need to rotate power as long as loads remain stable.

Crews have placed 15 poles since this morning and will finish the remaining 5 poles tomorrow. Pole and Line Crews have stopped work for the day to rest and warm up and will be out again in the morning working to complete repairs to bring customers back on to the system.

NOTICE: When we are ready to reconnect to the system, there will be a brief outage required to transfer customers from emergency generation back onto the L’anse au Loup system. Customers will be notified in advance.

Thank you again for all your support and understanding as we work to reconnect the community to the L’anse au Loup System.

UPDATE: December 11, 10:30am

All customers in Red Bay were restored last evening using the emergency generator installed yesterday. Loads are very high and we are asking customers to conserve power to ensure continued delivery of power and to help bring the remaining customers in cabin areas online. If absolutely necessary, we may need to rotate power to ensure we don’t overload the generator. We will make every attempt to notify customers before they are dropped.

Work to clear the sites from debris was also completed yesterday. Drilling and pole replacement began this morning and the first two poles are installed.

Updates will be available https://my.nlhydro.com/outage/ or customers can call 1-888-737-1296.

UPDATE: December 10, 7:00pm

The back-up generator has been successfully brought online. We are in the process of restoring customers.

We are asking our customers in the area to switch off appliances and turn down your heat. Once power is restored, wait 10 minutes before turning things back on.

UPDATE December 10, 12:00pm

A generator has arrived in Labrador and teams are on the way to begin installation. Successful connection will provide power to remaining customers without power until the pole repairs are complete. To help our teams in this effort, there are a few things we ask customers to do: switch off appliances and turn down your heat. Once power is restored, wait ten minutes before turning things back on.

Additional satellite phones are also on the way to assist with communications in the community.

Clean-up of debris and site prep is underway. Poles are in the process of being placed to ready sites for installation. Drilling and installation will begin as soon as the teams and equipment arrive on site.

Thank you to customers in the area for your support and understanding. Our crews are out working for you and will do absolutely everything possible to restore customers soon as safe to do so.

December 9, 2022

Power lines and poles in the Red Bay area on the L’anse-au-Loup System have been damaged by ice, which has affected 135 customers in the Red Bay Area. Our team estimates that 21 poles need repair or replacement. We have a contractor on the way from the Northern Peninsula with a team and specialized equipment to replace the damaged poles. Due to the extent of the work and the poor weather and terrain, we estimate that the repairs will take several days to complete. We have additional crews from Happy Valley-Goose Bay and Southern Labrador also in the area to assist.

Our crews will do absolutely everything possible to restore customers as soon as safe to do so.
