New Hydro Corporation Act Proclaimed

January 1, 2025

The Act Respecting the Amalgamation of Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro-Electric Corporation and Nalcor Energy (Hydro Corporation Act, 2024) received Royal Assent on December 4, 2024. The act came into effect January 1, 2025. The legislation completes the legal merger of Nalcor Energy into Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro with the new act replacing both the former Hydro Corporation Act, 2007 and the Energy Corporation Act.

Upon proclamation of the Hydro Corporation Act, 2024, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro’s board became the unified company’s board.

Hydro has been working as one team for several years, responding to the expectations of the public with respect to costs. This merger supports our commitment to identify and implement operational efficiencies resulting in cost savings for our customers.

“The act now reflects the way we have been operating for the past several years, as one Hydro – your crown utility. We continue to listen and serve the people of the province as we work to deliver safe, cost-conscious and reliable electricity for our customers. Continual improvement should be the goal of any organization, and NL Hydro has improved, we are different, and we are committed to meeting the expectations of those we serve.”
