Hydro Responding to Fire Near the Town of Churchill Falls

Provincial Forestry teams have shared a favourable report this morning with respect to fire activity. Crews are continuing to monitor and address lingering hot spots, and responders and equipment remain on standby to assist as needed.
We don’t anticipate further updates unless the situation should change.
We want to thank everyone who has pulled together to support the folks in Churchill Falls, especially our own people who throughout the response continued to ensure the safe, reliable operation of our system.
Once again, we’ve seen the community of Churchill Falls come together, with a focus on protecting our assets, taking care of each other and taking care of those who have joined forces to help in ongoing suppression efforts.

Forestry officials confirm that the fire continues to move east, away from the town and infrastructure, with a favourable weather forecast expected to support the crews who continue suppression efforts and treatment of hot spots and flare-ups.

Forestry officials confirm that the fire continues to burn east of the Town. Winds continue to push the fire and smoke to the east away from the Town.
Ground crews, Waterbombers and helicopters continue suppression efforts today and to address any hot spots.
There are no outages affecting our customers at this time.
Our focus remains on safely supporting the people in the town and continued safe operations at the plant. We continue to closely monitor the situation and will update as new information is available.

Response teams worked on the fire as long as daylight allowed. The fire continues to move east away from the Town and Facilities. Teams will mobilize again in the morning.
There will be a brief outage in the Town of Churchill Falls this evening. This interruption is to switch the town’s power distribution to another feeder due to a damaged pole line. This is a preventative measure to ensure the damaged pole is taken out of service.
The lines into Labrador City and Wabush remain in service at this time. Thank you to all customers in Lab West for their patience during the outages tonight.
Teams continue to monitor the situation closely and will provide an update tomorrow morning.

All residential customers in Labrador West have been restored.

We have reenergized the lines into Labrador West and are working to restore customers.

Hydro is responding to a fire burning near the community of Churchill Falls. Local emergency response is on site with additional resources on route.
Related to this fire, the lines into Labrador West have been impacted with power interruptions in Labrador City and Wabush. We are working to reenergize our lines. Outage information will be updated at https://my.nlhydro.com/outage/.
There has been no impact on generation of electricity from the plant.
