Teamwork powers Labrador West

June 8, 2026

Every year, our teams perform critical maintenance, refurbishment and upgrades on equipment across the island and Labrador electricity systems to ensure safe, reliable operation all year long.
Some of this work requires that power lines and terminal stations are “de-energized” so it can be completed safely and properly, which sometimes does mean outages to our customers.

Our teams are always working to reduce the frequency and length of these outages – and that’s what led to some recent work in Labrador West, to potentially eliminate one of our two annual outages to Labrador West customers.

In May, line crews from the island, Muskrat Falls and Churchill Falls worked together through live line activities to bond on at 230 kV to remove energized conductors to electrically isolate a disconnect that is scheduled for replacement. Using live line techniques to complete this work could potentially eliminate outages for our customers.

We know our teams love to complete this type of work and we love to see our skilled teams come together and work safely to reduce customer impact – great work by everyone involved!
