Supporting the Next Generation: Hydro’s Support of Memorial University
November 30, 2024
As the province’s only university, Hydro recognizes the importance that Memorial University plays in the future of the province and the future of our organization. We work closely with the university to support its students and programs, knowing that a home-grown educated population benefits us all.
In the past several years we’ve had the opportunity to not only support individual students through our NL Women in Engineering scholarship, but also provide monetary support and employee expertise to student groups including those designing and manufacturing electric and autonomous vehicles for competitions throughout North America and for student-led events including charitable fundraisers and department days. We’ve also had the opportunity to welcome classes to our facilities to give students an insight into our work.
In 2024, as a corporate sponsor, we were excited to help welcome 384 students from 16 universities to the 50th anniversary Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race. It was the first time that the event was held in Atlantic Canada, with teams constructing toboggans with concrete sleds and racing them at White Hills ski resort. In addition, several of our employees were involved in the organization of the event and in judging the construction and safety elements of the toboggans.
We also had the opportunity to support the Canadian Engineering Leadership Conference, which saw 200 engineering students from 52 universities gather in St. John’s to learn from each other and industry professionals. Our President and CEO, Jennifer Williams, lead a roundtable discussion with two Hydro employees, about their experiences with leadership throughout their careers.
We’re proud to continue our support of Memorial University, their students and their programs.
