CUSTOMER ADVISORY: COMMISSIONING AND ENERGIZATION OF LABRADOR ISLAND LINK CONTINUES

September 14, 2021

Commissioning activities are continuing on the Labrador-Island Link (LIL) from Muskrat Falls to Soldiers Pond, with the potential for higher levels of electricity flowing across the transmission line over the coming days.

While we do not anticipate any customer impact, when new equipment is brought online or tested in new ways there is increased risk. Hydro is monitoring closely and will update customers as required.

In the event of an equipment trip during commissioning activities, there can be a short impact to customers – called an “Under Frequency Load Shedding” event.
This is designed to protect equipment. But because Hydro has sufficient generation online and ready to serve customers, any outage would be short.

You can learn more about Under Frequency Load Shedding here.

This work is carefully planned to minimize impacts, however bringing new assets into service does come with some increased risk. We appreciate your patience as this important work is completed to strengthen the electricity system in the province and improve reliability for our customers.
