Penstock 1: Major Projects Milestone
December 19, 2025
Penstock 1, one of three original penstocks built in the 1960s, channels water from the reservoir to the powerhouse turbines. This year it underwent a major refurbishment to extend its operational life and ensure reliability into the future.
The work included the replacement and refurbishment of approximately 2,600 feet of existing penstock, along with the installation of an additional 1,100 feet of new penstock. Successfully completed in December, the Penstock 1 project at Bay d’Espoir marks a significant milestone for the site and the first project completed under Hydro’s current Major Projects portfolio.
The project stands out for its strong project management, high-quality execution, and focus on safety. It was delivered on budget, with zero recordable injuries and no reportable environmental incidents – an achievement that reflects the team’s commitment to doing the work safely, responsibly and sustainably.
This success was made possible through the collaboration and dedication of the project team, Bay d’Espoir plant operations, partner contractors, and local communities. Their careful planning, teamwork, and shared commitment to excellence were key to delivering a smooth and successful project.
For our customers, these upgrades represent an important step forward as they will play a critical role in improving long-term reliability and performance by reducing the risk of unplanned outages and enhancing operational efficiency. We are the energy you can count on.
