Public Advisory: High-power testing of the Labrador Island Link postponed

March 10, 2026

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) advises customers that the planned high‑power testing of the Labrador Island Link (LIL) scheduled for today has been postponed. Based on current weather forecasts, the test is unlikely to proceed on Thursday, March 12, 2026.

Before this type of testing proceeds, Hydro conducts a series of standard checks and preparations at sites throughout our Province. This type of high-power test also requires the coordination of several utilities in Atlantic Canada as our electricity grids are interconnected. During the pre-testing, an issue arose that requires additional time to investigate. That work is still underway, so the decision has been made to pause and reschedule the testing at another time in the near future.

This decision is precautionary, and there are no issues with the Labrador Island Link or system reliability.

Hydro will work with its counterparts in Atlantic Canada to undertake this test as soon as possible and will continue to update the public as more information is available. Following the successful completion of these tests, the Labrador Island Link will be fully available to operate up to 900 MW. This will deliver many benefits including opportunities to reduce use of fossil fuel for electricity generation, improved reliability, and increased opportunity to sell power out of province at beneficial times to maximize value for customers.

Hydro appreciates the patience and understanding of customers as this important work progresses. We know customers are counting on us to provide safe, reliable electricity, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Updates will be posted on nlhydro.com and Hydro’s social media channels.
