Statement from our President and CEO Jennifer Williams on the departure of Hydro-Québec President and CEO Michael Sabia.
June 11, 2025
Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to work closely with Michael and his team throughout the negotiation of the Churchill Falls MOU. And like any negotiation, there were tense moments. In those moments, we get to see what people are made of. From the outset, Michael understood that any new deal considered could in no way resemble the 1969 deal. His understanding of that reality was crucial to us getting to the MOU we have today. I thank him for his commitment and dedication, for being open- minded to a new working relationship between our utilities and Provinces and to keeping our focus on what really mattered – the benefits to us both by working together. Today, we have an MOU that is in stark contrast to the deal of the past and ensures Newfoundland and Labrador receives full and fair benefits for its resources.
Michael also shares our deep respect and commitment to our Indigenous Partners Innu Nation and I have no doubt this commitment will not waiver within Hydro-Quebec. His pride in our country is evident and I can think of no one more fitting for the role of Clerk of the Privy Council and Secretary to the Cabinet than Michael.
With respect to our collective work and continued progress on the MOU, I want to assure Newfoundlanders and Labradorians that it is business as usual. Over the past few years and since the signing of the MOU in December, our Executives, technical teams, corporate teams and many others have been hard at work towards the completion of the definitive agreements. We are planning engineering and geotechnical studies this summer to inform work starting next year. This is not the time to pause. We’ve given more than our fair share for 50 years. Labrador West industry power requirements are increasing, and the economy of Newfoundland and Labrador will benefit. Since day one, I’ve said that this deal makes sense from one utility to another, and our teams continue full steam ahead.
