Provincial Government Charging Toward a Cleaner Future with Investment in Ultra-Fast EV Charging
August 29, 2025
Today, the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, in partnership with Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (NL Hydro), announced an additional investment of $3.8 million to expand the province’s electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure network. NL Hydro has also invested $463,000 to support this expansion.
The project will see the construction of four fast charging stations (up to 120 kW) in 2026 in L’Anse-au-Loup and Port Hope Simpson—the first ever EV fast chargers located in Southern Labrador. It will also see an additional 10 new Ultra-Fast EV chargers (up to 400 kW) installed at locations across the province.
NL Hydro is now accepting applications from forward-thinking local businesses within these communities that are interested in becoming a Site Host for this new round of chargers and who are ready to support a cleaner, more connected Newfoundland and Labrador.
“With 21 Electric Vehicles in our fleet, Hydro is proud to support electric vehicle ownership in our province, and with more than 90% renewable electricity generated in Newfoundland and Labrador, this is a great place to drive electric. EV use is one driving force behind the need for more renewable electricity—last month, our charging network set a record for monthly usage reaching more than 2,800 sessions. The addition of these Ultra-Fast Chargers is the next frontier for EV travel in our province–cutting charging time in half, reducing wait times, and all while contributing to a more sustainable future for Newfoundland and Labrador.”
