Notice to Island Customers: Power Watch in Effect for Friday, January 23

January 22, 2026

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) is advising island customers that a Power Watch will be in effect beginning at 6 a.m. on Friday, January 23. NO ACTION is required for customers at this time and we expect the watch to end once the morning peak demand for electricity has subsided.

Frazil ice is continuing to impact water intake areas along the Bay d’Espoir (BDE) system. While common in many parts of the province, this is only the second time in the history of our BDE plant that frazil ice has occurred.

Our teams have utilized underwater remotely operated vehicles to get a better sense of the ice impact, and we have a team of divers who will work to remove the ice from our underwater structures.

We will continue to monitor the system closely and keep you updated as our teams work to lessen the effects on our system and for our customers.
