Update on power restoration efforts on Fogo Island (Jan.20, 2013 – 10:30 a.m.)
January 20th, 2013
January 20, 2013, 10:30 a.m. – Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro (Hydro) is continuing its
efforts today to restore power to all customers on Fogo Island.
Crews completed a ground and helicopter patrol of the distribution system on Fogo
Island this morning and did not find any visible damage. Crews proceeded to travel back
to Change Islands where they identified an equipment problem on the subsea cable at
the location where it terminates on Change Islands.
Crews are currently in the process of switching over to the spare subsea cable. If no
further issues are identified on the distribution system, customers can expect to have
power restored by early afternoon. Once the spare cable is energized, Hydro will bring
back groups of customers over the next several hours.
The outage on Fogo Island began at approximately 3:30 p.m. yesterday. Further updates
will be provided as more information becomes available.
Hydro apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of its customers.
Customers can get updates from the Hydro Power Outages and Emergencies (24 hrs)
