January 5th, 2013

January 5, 2013, 5:15 p.m. – Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro (Hydro) is reporting a
power outage for customers in Nain, Labrador due to an issue with one of the two
operating units at the diesel generating station. Additional maintenance crew and a line
crew arrived in Nain from Happy Valley – Goose Bay at approximately 4:00 p.m.
Labrador time to assist the power restoration efforts.
There are three generating units at the diesel plant. One of the three units has been out
of service since late December due to engine failure. A new engine has been ordered
and this unit is expected to be restored by mid-February.
The power outage today has been caused by a trip on one of the two remaining units.
Hydro is working to restore this unit. The line crew has begun to sectionalize the lines to
restore power to some customers until repairs are complete on the unit. Approximately
70 customers are currently restored. If required, Hydro will rotate power to customers.
Crews continue to work to restore the second generator however a restoration time is
currently unknown.
Hydro apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of its customers.
