Update (10:30 a.m.): Power Outage Advisory – Great Northern Peninsula (Feb.7, 2013)
February 7, 2013
February 7, 2013, 10:30 a.m. – Newfoundland & Labrador Hydro (Hydro) is reporting power outages to some customers on the Great Northern Peninsula.
Power has been restored to customers in Hawke’s Bay and Port Saunders, however due to salt contamination on the transmission line in the area, customers may continue to experience intermittent outages today. Hydro is in the process of delivering a mobile substation to Hawke’s Bay to provide power to this area until the salt contamination is resolved.
Salt contamination can occur following high wind conditions. Salt in the air in coastal areas accumulates on insulators, builds up and affects the flow of electricity. When the salt build-up reaches a critical point, it causes flashing and recloses the power line. Salt contamination is resolved naturally by rainfall. Customers in communities along the Great Northern Peninsula may also experience intermittent outages today due to the salt contamination.
Hydro apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of its customers. Customers can get updates from the Hydro Power Outages and Emergencies (24 hrs) line at 1-888-737-1296. Updates will also be provided at www.facebook.com/NLHydro and Twitter.com/NLHydro.
