Storm and Power Outage Advisory – March 26, 2014 – 11:30PM

March 26th, 2014

Newfoundland and Labrador continues to deal with a severe winter storm that has caused high winds and blowing snow for all parts of the province.

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) ensured a state of readiness for the storm by activating emergency preparedness protocols. The Energy Control Centre is continuing to monitor the storm and the system closely.

Communities on the Northern Peninsula have been experiencing outages throughout the evening and approximately 450 customers in Norris Point and Rocky Harbour are still without power. Restoration efforts are being impacted by the weather.

Intermittent outages have been reported in many communities and are likely to continue through the night. Customers should call to report outages at 1-888-737-1296.

Customers are urged to stay safe during outages. Safety information can be found at Hydrosafety.ca and GetPrepared.gc.ca.

Some tips for staying safe during a power outage:

  • Never go near or touch a fallen power line.
  • Don’t use camp stoves or barbecues indoors as they produce hazardous fumes.
  • Turn thermostats to the lowest setting or switch them off; and keep only one light on to let you know when power has been restored.
  • Do not plug a portable generator into the wiring system of a home or building. This action could result in serious injury to utility workers.
  • Listen to the radio.
  • Stay warm with blankets and wearing layers.
  • Spend some quiet, quality time with friends and family while crews work to safely restore power.

Customers can get further updates on the Hydro Power Outages and Emergencies (24 hrs) line at 1-888-737-1296 or on Hydro’s website at www.nlh.nl.ca.
