Stay Safe while Birdwatching and Enjoying Nature

Birdwatching is a popular activity in our province, and Hydro is proud to support Nature Newfoundland & Labrador as they make it easier than ever to connect with nature and give birdwatching a try, through their new Birdwatching Backpack program.

The Birdwatching Backpack program was launched in partnership with the Newfoundland & Labrador Public Library. Backpacks filled with everything you need to try birdwatching will be available for patrons to borrow from the public library in St. John’s beginning in early September 2020.

Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher or just getting started, it’s important to stay safe whenever you head out. As you head out on your next adventure, remember these important safety tips:

  • Let someone know where you’re going and when you plan to be back.
  • Wear proper clothing and footwear.
  • Bring a fully charged phone.
  • Familiarize yourself with the area.
  • Check the weather.
  • Use the buddy system if you can.
  • Prevent trips and falls by avoiding distractions like taking photos while walking.
  • Always keep a safe distance from any electrical equipment.
  • Be cautious near dams, spillways, and reservoirs—water levels can change quickly and without notice.
