Good to Know: Conservation Tips During a Power Outage
June 25, 2024
During an outage it is important for customers to conserve energy – this helps minimize the load on our systems as we try to bring power back online. During rotating outages, conserving energy also allows us broaden our reach and provide energy to more customers.
As your power is restored or, as outage rotations cycle through, here are some extra things to keep in mind:
- avoid unnecessary electricity usage, particularly during the peak use times of 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
- try to reduce usage, using the tips below, to assist with restoration to all customers as safely and quickly as possible.
Residential Customers:
▪ Conserve electricity by limiting use of air conditioning
▪ Conserve hot water by not running dishwashers, washers and showers
▪ Avoid using clothes dryers to help conserve
Business customers:
▪ Only heat spaces where and when necessary – reduce air conditioning (or heating) in vestibules, stairwells, lobbies and unused spaces
▪ Reduce equipment use during peak periods
▪ Reduce lighting – think about turning off outdoor safety and security lighting at the start of each day and turn off non-essential indoor lights, outdoor signs, billboards and other lighting
