Get to Know: Amber Hickman, Apprentice Electrician

March 4, 2023

As an apprentice electrician, Amber loves proving to herself each day that she’s capable of doing jobs she’d never have imagined.

Tell us about yourself.

I grew up in the small town of Bay d’Espoir, the youngest in a family of three girls. I graduated from college in 2019 with a Construction/Industrial Electrician diploma and started my apprenticeship with Hydro in 2021.

What does an average day at work look like for you?

An average day in the electrical shop consists of completing anything from lighting upgrades in the plant to troubleshooting a diesel motor at one of our remote sites. As an Apprentice Electrician I am often paired with a Journeyperson to guide and assist me as needed. Our goal at the end of every day is to complete the job efficiently and as safely as possible.

What makes your job at Hydro important?

We help keep the lights on! Electricians play an important role in ensuring all of our generating units are running smoothly and producing the electricity that Newfoundlanders and Labradorians rely on every day. We perform preventative maintenance on our generators on a regular basis to prevent issues from arising. If a unit trips, electricians are called out to investigate and troubleshoot so we can get the unit up and running as soon as possible to ensure we are always ready to provide safe, reliable power to the people of our province.

What made you want to work at Hydro?

My father has been employed with Hydro for many years. Growing up I have always taken a particular interest in his job. Watching him pursue a successful career motivated me to follow in his footprints.

What motivates you to do your best work every day?

Being a female in a male dominated trade! I love proving to myself each day that I am capable of doing jobs I would have never imagined I could. My coworkers are there to help me out whenever I need a hand and they push me to believe in myself. I am so lucky to have such a wonderful group of people to work with.

What’s the most rewarding part of your job?

Going home from work each day the same way I went in. Here at Hydro safety is at the heart of all we do and a responsibility we all share. It is a great feeling getting in bed at night knowing that my coworkers and I took every step in order to be safe at work that day.
