Electric Vehicle Rebate Program

Thereʼs never been a better time to go electric! Save up to $7,500 when purchasing an EV in NL

Are you considering an all-electric vehicle? With our new EV Rebate Program, now you can save $2,500 on the purchase or lease of an EV. That means you can save up to $7,500 when you combine our rebate with current federal incentives for the purchase of a new EV.

Youʼll feel great driving an EV, knowing that you are contributing to a greener future for Newfoundland and Labrador. Youʼll feel even better knowing that the majority of the electricity used to charge your vehicle comes from our provinceʼs clean, renewable energy sources. And, electricity is cleaner and cheaper than gas. A 400 km road trip in your EV would cost less than $10 at todayʼs electricity rates if you charged at home! And with 14 public fast-charging stations available from St. Johnʼs to Port aux Basques, itʼs easier than ever to charge on the go. You can drive across the island without ever having to worry about where to plug in next.

About the Program

Our new EV Rebate Program makes electric vehicles more affordable for Newfoundlanders and Labradorians. By increasing the number of EVs on our roads that are powered by clean, renewable energy, we can reduce our carbon emissions and help slow the pace of climate change in the province.

The rebate is an initiative of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador and is administered by Hydro.

Starting September 1, 2021, $2,500 rebates are available to eligible individuals, businesses, not-for-profit organizations or municipalities in NL for:

  • The purchase or lease (minimum 48 months) of a new all-electric vehicle*.
  • The purchase of a pre-owned all-electric vehicle.

Rebates will be issued to qualified participants for eligible all-electric EVs purchased on or after May 31, 2021. Completed applications will be accepted from September 1, 2021 to March 15, 2022. *Battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are powered by motors that draw electricity from on-board storage batteries. You plug in your BEV to recharge it. BEVs don’t produce emissions from the tailpipe. This means they can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other pollutants that form smog. If the source of the vehicle’s electricity is clean (such as solar or hydro-electric power) the vehicle will have no overall GHG emissions. For a list of current BEVs, visit page 40 and 41 of the Natural Resources Canada 2021 Fuel Consumption Guide.

**This rebate is being offered as part of the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Climate Change Action Plan. Eligible applicants must be a resident of Newfoundland and Labrador, a business, non-profit organization, or municipality in the province that is connected to the island interconnected grid or the Labrador interconnected electricity grid.

***For a vehicle to be considered new, it must be constructed entirely from new parts that have not been the subject of a retail sale and have less than 10,000 km.
