Working Together
OUR EVOLVING ORGANIZATION – WE ARE HYDRO
To meet the growing clean energy needs and opportunities within our province, as well as our responsibilities to our customers and stakeholders, Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro continued to evolve in 2022. The changes we are making reach across every part of our organization and we remain committed to our core purpose – we are Newfoundland and Labrador’s Crown utility. We continue to unify our teams, nurture a collaborative environment and foster an engaged workforce of proud employees.
A New Foundation
In 2022, we redefined our vision and values anchoring our employees to our organizational purpose and readying ourselves for the clean energy evolution. We launched a three year strategic plan to focus on our core utility priorities. This prepares us to rise to the opportunity of the evolving clean energy landscape that enables a sustainable, economically bright future for Newfoundland and Labrador.
The strategic directions outlined within our plan are designed to prepare us to harness the abundant energy opportunities before us. We are eager to work together with our employees, customers, Indigenous partners and other stakeholders to positively contribute to the future of Newfoundland and Labrador. Hydro’s strategic plan is outlined by three strategic themes, each with specific goals and objectives:
- Serving our Province – in all of our operations, regulated or non-regulated, field or office-based, we are a Crown utility owned by, and operated for, the people of our province.
- Working Together – we are safe, inclusive, and collaborative. We are a unified team that uplifts and supports each other to proudly serve the people of the province.
- Enabling Sustainable Growth – we contribute to a sustainable, economically vibrant future for our province through the responsible management and development of provincial energy resources.
Together, the bright minds and diverse perspectives that make up our team of dedicated energy professionals will work toward achieving our critical goals over the next three years.
Fostering Collaboration and Improved Safety
Our strong safety culture and collaborative spirit was evident in 2022 as teams came together for a common goal – to learn from each other, support one another, and keep each other safe. Where once a more segregated organization would have meant separate training for live line teams; Hydro’s live line training program continued to evolve. We brought together teams from Whitbourne, Churchill Falls, Soldiers Pond and Muskrat Falls to undertake training together. They worked side-by-side along with trainers from Manitoba Hydro International, on 350 Kv DC and 230 Kv AC steel structures. This specialized training helps our line workers safely maintain, upgrade and repair power lines when needed without the inconvenience of an outage for our customers. Through evolution of our organization and this program, we’re seeing opportunities for important connection among our teams.
Seeking Diversity and Understanding its Value
Our employees’ experiences, beliefs, and expectations are at the heart of who we are and why we’re here. Together, we are Hydro and together our employees helped us develop our new vision and new values to anchor and inspire our employees. Our collaborative approach speaks to who we are as a company and is now directly reflected in one of our values.
We seek diversity and understand its value while we work together, listen to each other and serve with respect. Throughout 2022 our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion team worked hard to foster this with employees. We celebrated our 5th annual Hydro Diversity & Inclusion Day, and throughout the year held sessions and provided information on accessibility at work, gender transition in the workplace, gender based violence, Truth and Reconciliation, allyship for 2SLGBTQIA+ people, and more.
Everyone is welcome at Hydro and each year we continue to do the work required to create inclusive and collaborative workspaces for our employees and those we serve.
Our Strategic Goals
The energy sector is evolving, and so too is our organization. The strategic directions outlined within our plan are designed to prepare us to rise to the challenge of our evolving energy landscape and harness the opportunities before us. It is an exciting time in our industry and organization, and we are eager to work together with our employees, customers, Indigenous partners and stakeholders to positively contribute to the sustainable, economically bright future of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Scholarship Program helps Women Pursue Careers in Trades and Technology
At Hydro, we’re committed to increasing diversity and inclusion in our communities and workplace. That’s why each year, Hydro partners with the Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC) to offer scholarships for women or gender diverse students pursuing careers in trades and technology.
Live line work: Keeping safety and our customers top of mind
At Hydro, we know our customers are counting on us to provide safe, reliable electricity 24/7. We also understand that any outages – whether planned or unplanned – can be disruptive to your day. To keep our province’s electricity system working as it should, our line workers receive specialized training so we can safely maintain, upgrade and repair power lines when needed without the inconvenience of an outage for our customers.
