Public Safety Advisory: Controlled water releases at Cat Arm and potential releases at other locations

June 27, 2023

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro is advising residents, cabin owners and travellers in the Jackson’s Arm and White Bay area on the island’s northwest coast that due to high reservoir levels resulting from spring snow melt and recent rainfall, we have begun releasing water at the Cat Arm Spillway into the Cat Arm River.

Additionally, Hydro may be required to release water at the following locations:

  • In the Hinds Lake area of western Newfoundland at Hinds Lake Spillway through Hinds Brook into Grand Lake;
  • In the Star Lake area of central Newfoundland at the Star Lake Spillway into Star Brook and then Beothuk Lake.

Please be aware releases may begin at any time.

Hydro is also advising that water releases are still ongoing in the Upper Salmon area of central Newfoundland at the North Salmon Dam Spillway into the North Salmon River.

People are advised to use these areas with great caution as water levels and flows will be higher than normal and may be unpredictable.
